“Holy Week” Events
Automobilia Monterey at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Monterey takes place on Wednesday and Thursday, August 14th & 15th. The doors open at 12:00 noon on Wednesday (til 6:00) and at 10:00 AM on Thursday (til 7:00). All original Automobilia is offered by an extensive array of over 45 vendors. Posters, photos, models, mascots, sculptures, books, apparel, jewelry and related objects of art are offered all in one spot (opposed to some that will be setup at a number of other venues later on in the week). A feast for the eyes of the automobilia connoisseur.
Carmel-By-The-Sea Concours On The Avenue will take place on Tuesday, August 14th between 9:00 AM and 6:30 PM on Ocean Avenue in downtown Carmel. 14 blocks of Ocean Avenue will be closed during these hours to traffic. This is a new event hosted by the Ocean Avenue Motor Club, and bills itself as “sophistication with a dash of fun”. It is reported that over 130 vintage cars that were built between 1946 and 1971 will be displayed. “Undeserved Marques” will be honored. Sounds interesting!
2007 Concorso Italiano® Celebrates 60 Years of Ferrari, The 50th Anniversary of the Ferrari 250GT Cabriolet & California Spyder + Featuring the Siata 8V & Fiat SV. The 22nd Annual Friday event also honors Italian designer Ugo Zagato, Celebrates the 35th Anniversary of the Maserati 3500 GT and the Reunion of the Lamborghini Countach on August 17, 2007. This year’s primary honoree is the iconic Enzo Ferrari’s Prancing Horse. Ferrari S.p.A. was founded in 1947. The venue is at the Bayonet Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering will be presented at the Beautiful Quail Lodge in Carmel on Friday, August 17th, from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This premier event is limited to 3,000 guests, and this year celebrates 50 years of racing at Laguna Seca, 75 years of the Monte Carlo Rally and the 100th birthday of the distinguished automotive icon Briggs Cunningham. The admission price includes lunch, beverages, and souvenirs along with the price of admission. Five bistros will be preparing and serving gourmet food under the direction of Quail Lodge’s chefs. The event is 1st Class all the way, as the entry fee of $200 suggests.
The 34th running of the Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races at Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway will run August 17th, 18th and 19th. This is the 50th year of Laguna Seca and the feature will be the celebration of Indy Roadsters. If you are not aware, the amount of racing hardware on display in the open-to-the-public paddock is pure mind-boggling. Sensory overload from engine and exhaust sounds (and the smell of race fuel) can take you into outerspace! The costs are $45-$65 for a 1-day pass, $95 for a 2-day pass and $125 for a 3-day pass.
The royal blue-blood of all Concours D’Elegance shows on planet Earth, The 2007 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, will again be presented on the 18th Fairway of Pebble Beach on Sunday, August 19th . Pebble will feature Aston Martin, Auburn, Cord and Duesenberg marques. A celebration of the 32’ Ford and cars displacing more than 10 liters in size ( a 427 would be considered a “small block”) will also be honored. Even at an advance ticket price of $150 ($175 at the gate), the sights to behold are truly unsurpassed (both people and automobiles). No place anywhere, will the presentation of exceptional restored motorcars be surpassed. The display of historic Ferrari’s is always a “breath-taker”.
Auctions
The Monterey Automotive Auctions will start out with the Christie’s Exceptional Motor Cars at the Monterey Jet Center on August 16th between 7:00 PM and 11:00 PM. A $60 entry fee includes a catalog and two tickets to the preview and sale. This year, the feature will be Steve McQueen’s 1963 Ferrari 250 GTL, chassis number 4891. This was McQueen’s 1st Ferrari. McQueen’s ownership was unbroken for 10 years. It has been the subject of a reported 4,000 hour restoration and in FerrariHaven’s opinion, should bring in excess of $800K from a savvy collector.
Bonhams & Butterfields Important Collectors’ Motorcars and Automobilia Auction at Quail Lodge on Friday the 17th will run you $75 to gain entry, and admits 2 to both the preview and sale including a catalog. This year, you will find a 1952 Allard J2X with Lemans history, a 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental touring saloon and a 1907 Packard Model 30 Runabout. The automobile begins at 12 noon and the vehicles start at 3:00 PM.
The Kruse International 4th Annual Vintage Car Auction will take place on the grounds of the Black Horse Golf Course on Friday, August 17th, between 2:00 PM and 9:00 PM. The cost is the admission to Concorso Italiano ($90 thru July 31st & $100 after). This year Kruse has teamed up with Collector Car Trader Online to market consigned autos.
RM Auctions’ Monterey Sports & Classic Car Auction, offering the World’s Finest Motor Cars, will again be based at the Portola Plaza Hotel in downtown Monterey on Friday and Saturday evenings, August 17th & 18th, from 5:00 PM to 1:00 AM. The cost is $30 for admission and $100 for their unbelievable and collectible catalog. RM’s event always brings out the most and best selection of Sports Cars in Monterey. RM has always been noted as a premier event for the Monterey Weekend. This year, the notable Ferraris to cross the block will include a 1953 Ferrari 212 Inter Coupe Vignale and a 1959 Ferrari 250GT LWB California Spyder. Prices at this premier auction should be reflective of the current Ferrari marketplace, which is still on the upswing. This is definitely a venue not to miss. RM is definitely a Ferrari marketplace leader in exceptional offerings.
Russo & Steele’s Sports & Muscle At The Marriott (also in downtown Monterey), is this year scheduled for both Friday and Saturday nights (17th & 18th) in the main ballroom of the Monterey Marriott Hotel. Admittance is $25 per guest. 150 cars will be offered (some with reserves). Among them will be 1 of the 36 1965 Shelby GT350 R models produced. This one was the featured R model that toured with the Shelby American Cobra Caravan in 1966. Also featured will be a 1972 Lamborghini Miura SV with 5,200 original kilometers that spent it’s early life in the hands of a wealthy Lebanon businessman. It was brought to the US in 1983 and was professionally restored by notable Lamborghini Specialist Gary Bobileff of San Diego, California. A number of vintage “Big Daddy” Ed Roth creations will also be offered including the “Rocket Rat Fink” motorcycle. This fantastic venue, presented by impresario Drew Alcazar, is a “must” for Muscle & Sportscar enthusiasts. The quality of the cars is exceptional and Drew and his wife Josephine “pull out all of the stops” to bring an outstanding automotive extravaganza to the Monterey experience. No dull moments here!
The Gooding & Company’s Pebble Beach Auction with take place on both Friday and Saturday nights starting at 6:00 PM at the Pebble Beach Equestrian Center. This year will feature two different types of collections. The Greg Garrison Collection of vintage Ferrari’s will be offered on Saturday evening and the Richard J. Solove Collection of vintage Rolls-Royces will be offered on Sunday. A 1956 Ferrari 410 Superamerica Scaglietti coupe will be the star of the Ferrari offerings. The cost of admission is $30 or $100 for dual catalogs and admission for 2.
